This week’s episode is sure to be a favorite of poetry lovers and/or novice witches! Anna Joy talks with Bola Juju, author of WITCHDOCTORPOET, her debut book of poems. In addition to giving us a thoughtful and profound interview, Bola treats us to readings of three of her poems, which you will hear interspersed throughout the episode.

Before we get into this amazing interview, Anna Joy answers her FIRST EVER listener question from Monica! “Can anyone advise on how to start a magickal practice?” Anna gives her answer.

Next, we jump giddily into our interview with Bola Juju, in which we discuss:

-the connection between Juju’s ancestor practice and her writing

-using creativity as a way to tap into an altered state of consciousness and perform magick

-understanding and healing forms of addiction and suicidality through ancestry

-how Bola is working to dismantle the stigma around mental health within the black community

“In creating WITCHDOCTORPOET I’ve tried to create a reality where you can be black and depressed and be someone navigating those two spaces at the same time and it’s ok.” -Bola Juju

-overcoming personal resistance in the writing process, especially when discussing emotions and experiences that are taboo

-why “Don’t speak ill of the dead” can prevent you for honoring your ancestors and healing ancestral trauma

“we rarely speak on the characteristics we take from our ancestors that may not be as positive” -Bola Juju

-how Bola first started her ancestor practice and her suggestions for those first starting out

AND OF COURSE, She responds to her iconic post: “if your witchcraft aint about decolonization, reparations and ancestral healing then it's a GIMMICK hiding behind kkkrystal kkklusters and crystals”

-why those of us who come from countries who have profited off of colonization need to realize how that legacy plays a role in our day-to-day lives and magick

and: how a focus on consumable magickal tools can take us out of our spiritual practice and render those tools “gimmicks”

“It’s part of our collective responsibility to look at how the craft we do affects all those around us” -Bola Juju

“Make the witchcraft that you do personally into something that is beyond you” -Bola Juju
