Before the interview, Anna Joy discusses the astrology of the present moment, including the Full Moon Lunar eclipse that occurred on January 21, 2019 and what it means for the rest of the year starting with Aquarius season.

They discuss:

-The concept of a “cusp” in  astrology and whether or not it is real

-Working with polarities or opposite signs- e.g. Cancer-Capricorn

-What Aquarius season is all about

Then, we dive into the interview with Pictureplane, who discusses the creative process as a magical act, his supernatural experiences while living in New Mexico and Colorado, theories about ancient civilizations, the oppressive force of Christianity and capitalism, and how he maintains his spiritual health by constantly creating art and connecting with community.

Podcast Episode 25: Revelations, A Scorpio Review and Discussion of Gender-Inclusive Witchcraft

On this New Moon in Scorpio, we have the opportunity to fully inspect and emote the revelations we’ve experienced about our personal occultism, taboo experiences and magic.

Anna Joy begins this episode by highlighting the recent Queer Witch Community (join in at https://www.facebook.com/groups/thequeerwitch/) discussion about “Divine Feminity vs Divine Masculinity” that was triggered by comments made in Episode 24: Love is LOVE with Tonya Gonzalez (trigger warning in the aforementioned episode and this one for possible discussions of gender essentialism and binary notions of gender).

Anna Joy discusses the general context of the Divine Feminine/Divine Masculine theory within mainstream New Age, Wiccan and Pagan cultures, what it is founded upon theoretically and why it is so mainstream. They also discuss the violent use of the Divine Feminine/Divine Masculine theory within  Second-Wave Feminism & Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminism and why it is important to consider the experience of gender non-conforming, genderqueer, trans and nonbinary witches when sharing your viewpoints on magick.

Next, Anna Joy imparts their own, nonbinary understanding of the idea of Divine Dualism as a replacement for what shall now be termed “The Divine Gender Binary” through the lens of astrology, including:

-the relationship between the Sun and the Earth

-Venus and Mars within the natal chart

-Lunar activity

Building off of the final point, Anna Joy launches into a discussion of how to use lunar cycles in your magickal practice, and how to specifically work with all New Moons as well as today’s New Moon in Scorpio.

Finally, we have a brief discussion of Jupiter in Scorpio’s influence over us for the past 12 months and how today’s New Moon in Scorpio is the season finale of all this activity.

Podcast Episode 19: Nonbinary Tarot with Casey Wait

This week is all about Tarot. First, Anna Joy introduces a new segment (complete with a jingle by Molly @thefirebrandwitch) called “Dispelling New Age Bullshit” and gives a historically accurate response to the commonly held myths about the Tarot deck, where it originated, and who came first: playing cards or the Tarot.

Sources:

https://science.howstuffworks.com/science-vs-myth/extrasensory-perceptions/tarot-card6.htm

Then we move into a wonderful interview with Casey Wait, creator of the Flower People Tarot, a nonbinary Tarot deck. We discuss Casey’s upbringing within Christianity, what inspired them to create their own decks, some stories about the swords suit, the Ace of Cups, and other specific Tarot cards that Casey has found prominent during their deck design and in living life. We also get into the importance of avoiding cultural appropriation within Tarot, and nerd out a little bit on some history (what do you think inspired the new segment?)

Hello, World!

Podcast Episode 17: Christopher Penczak and The New Age

Podcast Episode 17: Christopher Penczak and The New Age

You may have discovered Christopher Penczak’s (www.christopherpenczak.com) works on the shelves of your favorite metaphysical book store or on the Internet. His books, including “City Magick” and “The Witch’s Shield”, are bestselling in the pagan community for good reason. He’s thoughtful, patient, and never draws conclusions without proper research and citation. Plus, he’s been in the game since the late 90s! He is also, as you may have guessed, queer as fuck! Anna Joy and Christopher sat down during Taurus season to discuss magick, queerness, metaphysics and the New Age for the audience of the Queer Witch Podcast. Today this episode comes to you through the magick of the Internet (which we discuss in the interview).

Podcast Episode 16: Money Magick with Matthew VanHorn of LGBTQ Entrepreneur

Podcast Episode 16: Money Magick with Matthew VanHorn of LGBTQ Entrepreneur

This week is all about SECURING THAT BAG. Making your money work for you and your anti-oppression work. Becoming profitable in a way that makes you feel MORE authentic rather than less so. This episode is a must listen for all recovering crust punks, guilty privileged people and witchy entrepreneurs.

Podcast Episode 15: Ancestral Healing as Anti-Plastic Shamanism

PODCAST logo 1.jpg

In this solo episode, Anna Joy shares another chapter of her personal ancestral healing journey, but first, an in-depth discussion of this Friday’s Blood Moon Lunar Eclipse in Aquarius and what it means for us as Queer Witches.

The lesson of the Blood Moon: stepping into our own unique, attractive and badass authenticity as an essential path towards the healing we deserve as individuals and as a community. Because if you can’t love yourself, how the hell are you going to love the people around you?

Then, Anna Joy takes this Blood Moon awareness and uses it to focus on her experiences learning about, rejecting, and later re-learning about her ancestral heritage as an Irish-American and what role Celtic paganism has played in her spiritual journey. She uses this tale as a case study for how we can step further into our authentic paths as Queer Witches by examining our own cultural heritage, and use that authenticity as a tool to disassemble systems of oppression, both internalized and externalized.

Thank you so much for listening to and supporting the Queer Witch Podcast. As a special thank you, Anna Joy is letting Queer Witch listeners in on an upcoming offering. Be the first to know by listening all the way to the end.

Podcast Episode 14: Rise Up! Good Witch Talks Queerness & Chiron

corinna.jpg

This week Anna Joy talks to Corinna of Rise Up! Good Witch

“Corinna Rosella is a self-proclaimed 'good magic witch' living in humboldt county, california. she uses wildcrafted and garden grown herbs to make magical plant medicine, and uses 8 years of in-depth tarot insight to tell folks stories about their barriers and setbacks. The tarot is an old ancient way of applying human archetypes to human conditions, and offers us powerful tools in making the changes we need. “ -www.riseupgoodwitch.com

We talk about:

-Chiron in Aries and Corinna remembering how trauma and mental illness displaced a childhood alignment with witchcraft as she moved into teenage and and young adulthood

-how Rise Up! Good Witch came at the end of 20 years of trying to control and suppress her empathic abilities and downplay her quirky qualities, when memories of childhood potion making began bubblin up

-empathy/mediumship

-how Corinna’s punk background sort of prevented her from getting into the witch subculture for a while

-being a non-woo social justice witch and how it can be hard to identify with spiritual communities who aren’t

-why the phrase “low-vibration” doesn’t mean shit

-how trying to be “less intense” and not talk about “low vibrational” stuff led Corinna down a difficult path and how much better she feels being a weirdo witch!!

-mental health stigma in new age communities

-How being unabashedly queer is not only magickal, but anti-capitalist!

-Acknowledging our cishet-passing privilege

-Chiron in taurus and we chat about our natal charts

-Challenging ourselves to do better and investigate internalized systems of oppression as collective self-care

-How opposing and dismantling colonialism and white supremacy makes the world a healthier place for everyone

Podcast Episode 12: WITCHDOCTORPOET author Bola Juju

Screen Shot 2018-07-31 at 12.31.13 AM.png

This week’s episode is sure to be a favorite of poetry lovers and/or novice witches! Anna Joy talks with Bola Juju, author of WITCHDOCTORPOET, her debut book of poems. In addition to giving us a thoughtful and profound interview, Bola treats us to readings of three of her poems, which you will hear interspersed throughout the episode.

Before we get into this amazing interview, Anna Joy answers her FIRST EVER listener question from Monica! “Can anyone advise on how to start a magickal practice?” Anna gives her answer.

Next, we jump giddily into our interview with Bola Juju, in which we discuss:

-the connection between Juju’s ancestor practice and her writing

-using creativity as a way to tap into an altered state of consciousness and perform magick

-understanding and healing forms of addiction and suicidality through ancestry

-how Bola is working to dismantle the stigma around mental health within the black community

“In creating WITCHDOCTORPOET I’ve tried to create a reality where you can be black and depressed and be someone navigating those two spaces at the same time and it’s ok.” -Bola Juju

-overcoming personal resistance in the writing process, especially when discussing emotions and experiences that are taboo

-why “Don’t speak ill of the dead” can prevent you for honoring your ancestors and healing ancestral trauma

“we rarely speak on the characteristics we take from our ancestors that may not be as positive” -Bola Juju

-how Bola first started her ancestor practice and her suggestions for those first starting out

AND OF COURSE, She responds to her iconic post: “if your witchcraft aint about decolonization, reparations and ancestral healing then it's a GIMMICK hiding behind kkkrystal kkklusters and crystals”

-why those of us who come from countries who have profited off of colonization need to realize how that legacy plays a role in our day-to-day lives and magick

and: how a focus on consumable magickal tools can take us out of our spiritual practice and render those tools “gimmicks”

“It’s part of our collective responsibility to look at how the craft we do affects all those around us” -Bola Juju

“Make the witchcraft that you do personally into something that is beyond you” -Bola Juju

Podcast Episode 8: Interfaith Prayer with Joshua Berkowitz

joshua podcast marketing image.jpg

In this week's interview, Anna Joy interviews Joshua Berkowitz, a psychic reader, astrologer and spiritual healer who, in Anna's words, is the most theologically-minded millennial she's met! In this in-depth interview, Joshua is kind enough to share alot about:

-being magickal as a Jewish man

-the limitations of the theory of the law of attraction within the mundane world and how each person has their own experience with it

-the subtleties of gender identity as someone who has lived as a woman and is now called to explore a non-toxic masculinity

-the tomboy/sissy dynamic and how our society rewards maleness and punishes femaleness

-how religion has historically created a caste system that queer witches must thoughtfully rise up against it without demonizing the people who suffer because of it

and finally, Anna Joy's fave subject:

-SHAME and whether or not our trauma has meaning!

Joshua can be reached at @jwmberkowitz on instagram or find his website www.jwmberkowitz.com

Special Addendum: After Joshua and I recorded this episode, we both had some questions about the statement that white spiritual practitioners should make their services more accessible to people of color. After some more discussion and research, we realized there is a lot more complexity to this issue than we addressed in our discussion. Specifically, it is important to understand that people of color have their own cultural spiritual practices that we as white practitioners should never attempt to overshadow. Rather than offering unrequested reduced rates for people of color, we feel it is more important for white practitioners to incorporate financial reparations to communities of color. Giving back financially and energetically to communities who’s spiritual practices have been marginalized and appropriated by white spirituality is far more important than advertising  services to people of color. If anyone has questions or suggestions about this topic that they would like addressed on the Queer Witch podcast, please send them to annajoy@annajoyhealing.com. We thank you for your attention!

Podcast Episode 4: Iyawo Oyá (Geovanny Manrique Interiano)

Today, I bring you a super valuable episode of the Queer Witch Podcast with Geovanny Manrique Interiano, who I will refer to as Iyawo because he recently was initiated into his religion, Santería!

What’s super unique about Iyawo is that his predominant spiritual contact is through dead people! He is a medium and espiritista who has had contact with the other side since he was a little baby, which he tells you all about. Iyawo was also gracious enough to give us a personal narrative of his path to discovering the right mentors and connecting with the ile (or house) that he was initiated into! He also describes the cultural diffusion of Santería as it was brought in slave ships and then dispersed across the new world. Then, we get into the connection between coming out as queer and coming out as a witch, how all religions are steeped in the dynamics of the dominant culture, and our thoughts on how and why the millennial generation is having a spiritual awakening.

Also, Iyawo has suggested a very special segment for upcoming episodes of The Queer Witch Podcast where you, the listener, can ask a question and have it answered by us! So stay tuned to the end of the episode to find out how you can participate.

To contact Iyawo for questions, tarot readings or guidance, you can find him on Facebook (Geovanny Manrique Interiano) or on Instagram @brujxs_cauldron

To submit a question for me & Iyawo to answer on the podcast, email annajoy@annajoyhealing.com or dm (and follow!) the podcast's instagram @thequeerwitch
